The Krauchenwieser Seenplatte , also called the Upper Swabian Lake District , describes the ten lakes in the Upper Danube Nature Park between Krauchenwies and Zielfingen in the district of Sigmaringen , Baden-Württemberg , Germany .

geography

Emergence

The ice ages have not only changed the course of the Danube. They also shaped the landscape in other ways: For example, when the glaciers melted, they left behind large amounts of gravel: rock that was transported from the Alps to the Danube . Between Krauchenwies and target Began there since the Würm large deposits - and also several gravel pits, which undermine the gravel. An extensive lake landscape has emerged in the hollows created by gravel mining.

General

The Zielfinger Baggersee (Surfsee), seen from the west

The ten lakes are separated by state road 456 into the four western and six eastern lakes of the “Im Ablachtal” area. The four western lakes are the two former Lutz quarry ponds, known as the Ablacher lakes (Ober- and Untersee Postwiesen; coll. Lutzensee), and the two Steidleseen northeast of Krauchenwies . They are located together with the Steidle bathing lake (Steidlesee I), also called Krauchenwieser See, the eastern lakes on the Krauchenwieser district. The remaining five lakes in the east are located in the Mengening district. These include the Vogelsee (nature reserve), the Zielfinger Baggersee (surf lake) and the South Seas I, II and III.

The Krauchenwieser Seenplatte is only interrupted by the Princely Park and the Josefslust Wildlife Park . The confluence of the Andelsbach in the Ablach lies in the Princely Park . The Ablach flows in its straightened bed on the northwest side of the Lutz quarry pond, through the Princely Park and on between the two Steidleseen lakes at the Krauchenwies sewage treatment plant. After the state road 456 it passes the south bank of the Steidlesee, then between Vogelsees and Südsee I as well as Zielfinger Baggersee and Südsee II and III.

The lakes north of the Ablach between Krauchenwies and Rulfingen were created between 1960 and 2000. South of the Ablach, gravel mining is still ongoing.

ecology

fauna

The lakes are home to countless species of birds, especially the Zielfinger Vogelsee , which is a nature reserve. According to Karl Fidelis Gauggel from the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) eV from Sigmaringen, up to 3,000 water birds stop at the lakes in winter . As long as the water surface doesn't freeze over, they stay and look for food in the shallow, muddy bank water. If the winter is mild, they stay the whole winter, otherwise they switch to the Danube or Lake Constance .

The middle lake was declared a nature reserve "Vogelsee" in 1992 . NABU Sigmaringen has been looking after the Zielfinger bird lake for many years and has created islands in the lake where the birds can breed. A small artificial steep wall was specially built for kingfishers, in which the blue-orange hunters have their breeding cave. The silted up areas were dredged and shallow ponds were created within the reed beds in order to create a habitat for the little bittern and the potted mullet.

The Steidlesee I gradually silts up, so that the rare waders and reed dwellers have meanwhile moved away again. At Südsee II, the woody growth is cut back, because the most important lapwing breeding site is there.

Depending on the season, you can watch a wide variety of native or migrating birds there. The bird population lists 16 species that breed on the lake and around 50 migrants. It ranges from the mallard and the great crested grebe to the great egret , gray heron , kingfisher and bittern to the osprey . The winter guests include up to 800 coots and dozens of cormorants . The gray goose population is causing damage to agricultural land.

In 2010, large boards with photos of the birds were set up to inform walkers.

Leisure and Tourism

The ten lakes between Krauchenwies and Zielfingen are also an excursion tip. Various circular hiking trails lead around the lakes. Signs provide information about the formation of the bird lake and other signs show images of various water birds. The individual lakes with a water surface of 170 soccer fields also invite you to surf, swim and fish. There is a campsite at the Ablacher Lakes and a mobile home park at the South Sea (Zielfinger See).
