The Ablacher Lakes ( Baggersee Lutz , colloquially Lutzensee ) are two, originally three, quarry ponds west of Krauchenwies , a municipality in the district of Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg , Germany . They belong to the so-called “ Krauchenwieser Seenplatte ” in the Upper Danube Nature Park .

geography

The Ablacher Lakes today consist of the larger, western “Obersee Postwiesen” and the smaller, eastern “Untersee Postwiesen”. These are separated from each other by a dam. On the north (west) side of the lakes, the Ablach flows in its straightened bed from southwest to northeast.

The lakes are groundwater lakes of human origin: They were created through the wet extraction of gravel. The excavated gravel was deposited here in the Ablachtal and the surrounding area by an Ice Age moraine around 18,000 years ago. When the glaciers thawed, the meltwater had to drain away. The meltwater rivers graveled up the old valleys. This gravel was covered again when the glacier advanced and so-called advance gravel was formed.

The former quarry ponds have no natural inlet and outlet. However, in addition to the groundwater, they are also partly fed by the seepage water from the Ablach, which is only 20 meters away. The Obersee has a dam piercing through a concrete pipe on its northeast bank to the Untersee. The Untersee drains on the northeast bank via an artificial drainage structure, also a simple concrete pipe to the Ablach.

The Krauchenwieser Seenplatte is only interrupted by the Princely Park and the Josefslust Wildlife Park . The confluence of the Andelsbach in the Ablach lies in the Princely Park .

history

Emergence

The lakes are the result of the wet mining of gravel by the former Krauchenwieser company Josef Lutz & Sohn GmbH, founded in 1897 in the Gewann Postwiesen . You operated a concrete plant here with the ready-mixed concrete and concrete pipe production divisions . The colloquial term "Lutzensee" for the lakes can be traced back to this concrete plant.

Wet mining progressed from southwest to northeast. The Obersee gravel quarrying area had reached its final size at the end of the 20th century, so that the gravel deposits were now being exploited in the direction of the Princely Park in the Unterlachen district . The originally two western quarry ponds were merged into one body of water by removing a dam during renaturation measures in 2007/2008. At the end of 2008 / beginning of 2009, the Untersee gravel mining area had also reached its final size. The approval at the time was given on the condition that recultivation be carried out after the gravel extraction was completed . The company did not carry out this recultivation, after the occurrence of the bankruptcy this requirement remained unfulfilled.

A permit for further wet mining in Gewann Rosenwiese between the Lutz quarry pond and the Josef Lutz stadium below Ablach never went beyond the planning stage. Another quarry pond, the “Lake Rosenwiesen”, was supposed to be created on a mining area of 6.5 hectares, and 600,000 cubic meters of gravel were to be extracted in 8 to 14 years. A mobile system should have taken over the tasks of the factory building from the 1950s.

Since the stability of the dam was assessed as endangered by demolitions on the embankment, the Sigmaringen District Office had to intervene in April / May 2015 as part of a replacement. Gravel material was filled in on the embankment and the dam crest was partially raised. In addition, all large trees on the dam had to be cleared. At the base of the embankment, reed sods were brought in for support. In a later step, shallow water zones are to be created. The measures were financed via a guarantee deposited at the time of the approval process.

use

Today's campsite "Seencamping Krauchenwies" on the south bank (2015)
At that time the storage area for the prefabricated pipe parts from Lutz Beton und Kies (2007)

The leaseholder of the Obersee is the fishing association Forelle Albstadt Zollern-Alb-Kreis 1966 e. V. who has leased the lake from the Lutz Beton und Kies company as the owner and operates angling on the lake with day tickets.

The Untersee has been owned by the Neufra / Hohenzollern 1996 e. V. Fishing is permitted with a valid annual ticket. Swimming, boating and open fires are prohibited.

The Lutz Beton und Kies company operated the “Ablacher Seen” campsite on the southern shores of the Obersee, which has since been taken over by HLS CS GmbH. The name was changed to "Seencamping Krauchenwies".

The association “Nature and Landscape e. V. ”from Krauchenwies built the“ Ablacher Seen Nature Trail ”between 2011 and 2013, a circular route with a display board with benches, nesting boxes, an insect hotel and a nature observation tower on the banks of the Ablach. It was completed by the “ 72-hour ” social campaign of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ) from June 13 to 16, 2013. In addition to two entrance boards, boards provide information on the topics of Natura 2000, beavers, rough ramps, birds, succession, wild bees, plants by the water, fish in the lake, running water as a habitat for fish and water birds.

The Krauchenwieser municipal council decided on March 10th, 2009 the development plan "Ablacher Seen" as a statute.

ecology

fauna

In the ornithological annual report 2005 about the bird life of the Krauchenwieser Baggerseen u. a. also reported of breeding pairs of the following bird species: little ringed plover , kingfisher and black-throated diver .

The fish population includes the following fish species: pike (record 37 lbs. And 132 cm), pikeperch , perch , rainbow trout , carp (record 34 lbs.), Tench , bream , chub , occasional catfish , eels and various species of white fish .

Isolated traces provide information about the lively activity of two beavers that have been found at Steidlesee III (lake northwest of the L 456) since autumn 2005 . In 2014 the beaver began to pile up characteristic wood at his castle on the north bank of the Obersee near the Dammweg.

flora

With the establishment of a campsite, extensive renaturation measures for the riparian strip went ahead. So ramparts were raised on the eastern lake and the bank area flattened. A wide belt of reeds is to be created here. A shallow water zone is to be created on the northwestern part of this lake .

sediment

The average visibility is 2.32 meters.

Water quality

The assessment of the water quality by the Tübingen regional council showed in the last few years (2002 to 2007) a hygienic state that is well suited for swimming. The number of coliforms was mostly below 30, and that of faecal coliforms was also below 30, in a 100 ml water sample. In tests by the consumer magazine Öko-Test between 2001 and 2003, the Lutz quarry was also given good values. It was also tested for phenol, surfactants and mineral oils, all values were below the limit values.

On February 26, 2008, the main hydraulic line burst on a gravel excavator near the Untersee and 150 to 200 liters of hydraulic oil leaked out. Much of the oil could be caught by the company's security measures. A smaller part ended up in the gravelly subsoil. The Krauchenwies volunteer fire brigade used oil binding agents to prevent the quarry pond from being polluted. The contaminated gravel layers were removed and disposed of.

Protection status

Large parts of the lakes are protected as Fauna Flora Habitat (FFH) .

Trivia

  • Josef Lutz Stadium : The Josef Lutz Stadium west of the lake, in the "Boschenwiesen" district at the entrance to Ablach, is dedicated to the entrepreneur Josef Lutz, who died in 1999.
