David Gugerli

David Gugerli (born October 21, 1961 in Zurich ) is a Swiss historian and professor of the history of technology at the ETH Zurich .

Life

In 1986 David Gugerli graduated from the University of Zurich with a degree in general history, the history of modern German literature and literary criticism. In 1987 he did his doctorate with Rudolf Braun . After research stays in Paris , Mexico City , at Stanford University , at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and in Vienna, he completed his habilitation in 1995 at the University of Zurich with a thesis on the electrification of Switzerland. After a short time as a professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México , he was elected Assistant Professor in 1997 and Full Professor of Technology History at ETH Zurich in 2001. He has also been a Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum since 2016 .

Gugerli is a co-founder and member of the Center for the History of Knowledge , editor of the series Interferenz - Kulturgeschichte der Technik and co-editor of Nach Feierabend, Zürcher Jahrbuch für Wissensgeschichte. He represents a cultural history of technology. His work focuses on a broad thematic field: the political history of the body, the history of electrification , the cartographic control of national space and the development of the technical university in the 19th and 20th centuries. More recently, studies have been carried out on the history of computer-aided search procedures and databases as well as the knowledge-based economy ( reinsurance industry ). Gugerli was President of the Strategy Commission at ETH Zurich from 2009 to 2016 .
