List of streets and squares in Merano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Map of Merano 1897

The names of streets and squares in Meran , Obermais , Untermais and Gratsch originally developed through common usage - they are often based on farm names or other prominent buildings. In the past, all names were monolingual in German. House numbers were introduced with the Theresian Cadastre in 1772, house numbers assigned to streets have been documented since 1887.

After the end of the First World War, South Tyrol became part of Italy (see Treaty of Saint-Germain ). From this point on, the existing street names were renamed for political reasons. On August 26, 1921, the freely elected community committee initiated the renaming of some street names that were reminiscent of the Habsburg monarchy . From October 12, 1922, under pressure from the fascists, all street names were bilingual (see Italianization ).

In 1924, prominent streets and squares were named after members of the Italian royal family.

In 1928 and 1929, numerous other identity-giving street names were replaced. In 1935 the Kapellensteig became Via Balilla, Brennerstraße became Via del Littorio, Goethestrasse became Corso Armando Diaz, the Winkelweg became Via dei caduti facisti. Etc.

After Mussolini's disempowerment, the street names from 1935 were withdrawn.

During the Second World War Italy surrendered in 1943, and South Tyrol was then occupied by German troops (see the Alpine Foreland operational zone ). The German authorities replaced eleven street names on April 20, 1944 and reinstated the old names from the pre-fascist era.

All street names have been bilingual since 1945. Some of the names introduced by the fascists have been preserved to this day (see below).
