David Holston (born January 26, 1986 in Pontiac , Michigan ) is an American basketball player . Comparatively small for a professional basketball player, Holston has been playing as a professional in Europe since completing his studies in his home country in 2009. With the exception of the basketball Bundesliga 2011/12 at the Artland Dragons, he played exclusively for clubs from the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi . Since the 2012/13 season he played for Büyükşehir Belediyesi SK from Mersin on the southeast coast of Anatolia .
Career
Holston did not get an athletic scholarship after graduating from Avondale High School in his hometown and began studying at Chicago State University in 2004 . Their basketball team Cougars , for which Holston was active in championship games from 2005, dropped out of the Mid-Continent Conference in 2006 and formed an independent team within NCAA Division I until 2009. Holston helped the team to their third positive season record in 2009 with more wins as defeats in their then 25-year membership of Division I of the NCAA and the first since 1986. Holston himself was with 27.7 points per game in the 2008/09 season the second best player in this category in the entire Division I and with 450 successful three-point throws in his college career the second best player ever in the history of Division I. These records helped Holston and the otherwise neglected college team to media attention and, according to his coach, made Holston the face of the college's basketball program. Despite invitations to training camps from NBA clubs like the Chicago Bulls , this was not enough to secure a professional contract in the NBA for Holston, who is around 20 to 25 cm shorter than the average professional player in his playing position.
Holston began his professional career in Europe in 2009 with Pınar Karşıyaka from Izmir in the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi . The club reached the play-offs for the Turkish championship twice in the following two seasons , each of which was eliminated in the first round. In the third European club competition EuroChallenge 2010/11 they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Russian representative BK Spartak Saint Petersburg . The same round he reached a season later with his new club Artland Dragons, where against the eventual title winner Beşiktaş Milangaz was the last stop. In the 2011/12 basketball Bundesliga , the Artländer Verein was eliminated for the second time in a row in the semi-final series of the championship play-offs against defending champion Brose Baskets Bamberg, who were also eliminated in the 2012 Beko BBL Cup . For the 2012/13 season, Holston returned to Turkey and signed a contract with the local basketball club in Mersin, Southeastern Anatolia . After a year, however, he returned to Germany and joined the Artland Dragons again for the 2013/2014 season . There he received a contract until 2015. At the beginning of May 2015, the Dragons withdrew from professional basketball.
