David Julius Pott

David Julius Pott (born October 10, 1760 in Nettelrede ; † October 18, 1838 in Göttingen ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, biblical scholar and university professor.

Life

Pott studied theology at the University of Göttingen , where he was repetent in 1783 and private lecturer in 1786 . In 1787 he was appointed associate professor of theology at the University of Helmstedt and in 1788 full professor. In 1798 he received the title of Abbot of Mariental and thus became a member of the Braunschweiger Landtag. After the Helmstedt University of Applied Sciences closed in 1809, he was transferred to Göttingen in 1810 as a professor and consistorial councilor. In 1811 and 1819 he was Vice Rector of the University. He was married to Auguste Johanna, b. von Crell († July 11, 1816). In 1826 the city of Göttingen awarded him and his daughters honorary citizenship .

Pott wrote a number of exegetical treatises on the Old and New Testament. While most of his work soon became out of date, his collaboration on the completion of Johann Benjamin Koppe's revision of the Greek original text of the New Testament N. T. graece perpetua annotatione illustratum after his death in 1791 together with Thomas Christian Tychsen , Christoph Ammon and Johann Heinrich Heinrichs for their praised philological thoroughness. Pott edited the Greek texts of the letters of Peter, the letter of James, and the first 10 chapters of the first letter to the Corinthians.

From 1800 to 1807, initially with Georg Alexander Ruperti , then from volume 3 alone, he published a well-known exegetical journal under the title Sylloge commentationum .
