The Academia Julia
The university, the Academia Julia or Academia Julia Carolina , existed from 1576 to 1810. It was founded by Duke Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and was officially opened on October 15, 1576. The last lectures were given in the spring of 1810.
In the 234 years of its existence, the University of Helmstedt was one of the most recognized universities and was at times the third largest university in the German-speaking area. In total, around 400 professors and 45,000 students have left their mark on the city. According to older sources, there were only 279 professors, including 60 theologians, 76 lawyers, 46 medical professionals and 97 philosophers.
