Lorenz (Florens) Friedrich von Crell (also: Lorenz Florenz Friedrich von Crell ; born January 21, 1744 in Helmstedt ; † June 7, 1816 in Göttingen ) was a German physician, mountain ridge and chemist .

Lorenz Crell was the son of the physician Johann Friedrich Crell and grandson of the surgeon and botanist Lorenz Heister . He studied at the University of Helmstedt from 1765 , earned his master's degree in philosophy and received his doctorate in medicine in 1768 with the thesis Contagium vivum .

Crell was from 1771 to 1773 professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the Collegium Carolinum Braunschweig and at the anatomical-surgical institute and from 1774 full professor of medicine. From 1780 it was the ducal mountain ridge of Brunswick. From 1783 to 1810 he was also professor of philosophy and medicine at the University of Helmstedt and finally professor of chemistry at the University of Göttingen .

In 1778 he founded the journal Chemische Annalen for the friends of the natural sciences, Arzneygelahrheit, Hausungskunst und Manufacturen . This is considered to be the world's first chemical journal to be published. He translated some works by Richard Kirwan into German. Like Kirwan, Crell believed in the phlogiston theory .

Crell was raised to the Leopoldina in 1778 and to the imperial nobility in 1781 by Emperor Leopold II . From 1778 he was also a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . From 1784 he was a foreign and from 1812 honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1786 he was also an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg and a member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1783 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh , in 1788 a foreign member of the Royal Society , 1804 a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences and 1807 a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
