Friedrich Weise

Friedrich Weise the Elder (born October 20, 1649 in Camburg , † September 30, 1735 in Helmstedt ) was a German philosopher , Protestant theologian , pastor and university professor .

Life

Weise was born as the son of tax collector Nicolaus Weise. He first attended school in his hometown before being enrolled at the University of Jena in 1670 . He initially studied philosophy and obtained his master's degree in this subject in 1672 . Then he devoted himself to the study of theology. In 1673 he moved to the University of Erfurt , where he continued his studies. He also attended courses at the Erfurt Jesuit College . He also gained his first experience as a teacher in Erfurt.

After some time as a teacher, Weise received a professorship in philosophy at the Jena University in 1680 . In 1682 he became a preacher in Berga an der Elster and in 1690 cathedral preacher at Naumburg Cathedral and school inspector in Naumburg. In 1695 he followed a call to Quedlinburg as a court preacher , saw himself exposed to some hostility there and therefore followed another call to Helmstedt in 1697. There he was first promoted to Dr. theol. PhD . Then he received a full professorship in theology at the University of Helmstedt . He was also pastor of St. Stephani and general superintendent of Helmstedt and Ephorus of the city school. He enjoyed great popularity in the city and stayed in office for a long time. When his strength waned, Christoph Timotheus Seidel was placed at his side as an adjunct.

Weise suffered a blow in 1732 and was severely restricted until his death.
