David Köler , also: Colerus , Cholerus , Koler (* 1532 in Zwickau ; † July 25, 1565 there ) was a German Renaissance musician, organist, cantor, composer and the first conductor of the Schwerin court orchestra .

Life

Daid Köler came from a poor background. A scholarship enabled him to attend the Latin school in Zwickau. From 1551 he studied in Ingolstadt . In 1554/55 he was cantor in Schönfeld in Bohemia , today Krásno nad Teplou . This is where his collection of ten psalms was created, only one copy of which is completely preserved in the Zwickau Council School Library . In 1556/57 he worked in St. Joachimsthal, today Jáchymov , and from 1557 to 1563 cantor in Altenburg .

In 1563, Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin appointed him court music director. Linked to this was the task of creating a “Hof-Cantorej”. But after two years he went back to his hometown of Zwickau as city cantor in 1565. His successor in Schwerin was (after a vacancy) Johannes Flamingus .
