Davorin Kempf (born August 21, 1947 in Virje ; † January 14, 2022 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian composer , pianist and musicologist . The fusion of new and traditional musical styles is a central point in his compositions. Some of his works combine classical ensembles, such as orchestras or choirs , with electro-acoustic music .

Life

Davorin Kempf studied at the Music Academy in Zagreb from 1966 to 1973 and received his diploma in piano, conducting and composition ( Stjepan Šulek ). After postgraduate studies in composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Milko Kelemen and Erhard Karkoschka , he went to Cologne in 1976. At the Musikhochschule in Cologne he studied with Mauricio Kagel , Joachim Blume and Hans Ulrich Humpert . Since that time he has been intensively involved with the synthesis of music and electronics. Among other things, the work Music for Piano and Electronics (Dies irae, dies illa - Variations) was created here. The electro-acoustic part was realized in the Electronic Studio of the Cologne University of Music.

In 1990, Kempf received a Masters of Arts in composition from the University of Iowa with Donald Martin Jenni and Kenneth Gaburo . During this time the composition Spectrum for large orchestra and electronics was written. The electroacoustic part was realized in the Lewis Studio of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In his piano compositions, Davorin Kempf was repeatedly inspired by classical composers such as Bach or Scriabin . The composition Prelude and Fugue – Fantasy (Hommage à Bach) , written in 2000, and the piano piece Homage à Scriabin (2003) should be mentioned here.

Kempf received his doctorate in philosophy and humanities from the Freie Universität Berlin in 2006 with Albrecht Riethmüller . Topic of the dissertation: Symmetry and variation as compositional principles. Interdisciplinary Aspects . In Croatia he was the artistic director of the organ recitals in Požega for several years . Kempf was the first composer in residence at the Zagreb Philharmonic (2012/13 and 2013/14). He was a Lifetime Member and Deputy Governor of the American Biographical Institute Research Association .

From 2000 Davorin Kempf was a full professor at the Music Academy in Zagreb, in the department of composition and music theory. He lectured at the University of Iowa , Graz and Ljubljana , among others . In 2018 he was elected a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts . His compositions are performed at concerts and music festivals worldwide.
