David Thomas "Davy" Jones (born December 30, 1945 in Manchester , England ; † February 29, 2012 in Stuart , Florida , USA ) was a British actor , percussionist and singer , who was particularly famous for his role as a member of the US pop band The Monkees became known.

Life

When Jones was 14 years old, his mother died after a long illness. At his father's request, he trained as a jockey with Basil Foster . His acting career began with a job through Foster at a theater in London's West End.

As a teenager, Jones starred in various British soap operas , including Coronation Street . In the musical Oliver! he played the Artful Dodger.

On February 9, 1964 he was with Oliver! -Crew featured in an episode of the Ed Sullivan Show , which also saw the Beatles make their acclaimed US debut . Of that day, Jones said, "I saw the Beatles from the side of the stage and I saw the girls go crazy and I told myself that this is exactly what should happen to me."

Ward Sylvester of Screen Gems took Jones under contract, having him in the Ed Sullivan Show had seen. From then on he played in American television series such as Ben Casey and The Farmer's Daughter . He also recorded a single and an album for Colpix Records , which made it into the charts but were still not very successful.

From 1965 to 1970 Davy Jones was a member of the Monkees , a pop rock group that was formed in connection with the television series The Monkees . As the group's lead singer, he sang many of their songs, including I Wanna Be Free and Daydream Believer . When the show was canceled and the group broke up, he continued as a solo artist. He later formed a band with his former Monkees colleague Micky Dolenz and the composers Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart , which broke up after a short time.

In 1995 he made an appearance as himself in The Brady Family , where he sang his hit Girl in a "spiced up" version. In 1997 Jones also had a musical appearance in the series Sabrina - Totally Verhext! . In April 2006 Jones recorded Your Personal Penguin , which was written by children's author Sandra Boynton . On November 1, 2007 another book by Sandra Boynton and a CD with the title Blue Moo appeared . Jones can be heard in the book and on the CD singing Your Personel Penguin . Jones and Boynton have become close friends through the project.

Jones made a guest appearance as himself on the 2009 Spongebob SquarePants series , as part of a play on words with Davy Jones' Locker . In 2011 Davy Jones went on a reunion tour with the Monkees and appeared in different versions of the musical Oliver! as "Fagin". He bred horses in his native England , although he lived in Beavertown , Pennsylvania . Jones most recently attempted to become a citizen of the United States . He was divorced twice and had four children in total. Most recently, Jessica Pacheco was his partner.

Davy Jones died of a heart attack on February 29, 2012 at the age of 66 .
