Dayton is a city in Liberty County in the US state of Texas .

The city is located in the south of the county in southeast Texas, about 100 km to the east from Louisiana , about 70 km to the south from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of ​​28.6 km² without any significant water surface.

history

The place was founded in 1831 under the name West Liberty and was part of the city of Liberty , separated by the Trinity River . A road and a ferry connected the two places. In 1854 the city was renamed Day's Town in honor of IC Day, a large landowner in the south of the city. The railway station was known as West Liberty , Days Station, and Dayton Station . When the first post office was established, the postal administration gave the place the name Dayton.

According to the 2000 census, 5,709 people lived here in 2,129 households and 1,517 families. The population density was 199.7 inhabitants per km ².
