Dayton is a city in Liberty County in the US state of Texas .
geography
The city is located in the south of the county in southeast Texas, about 100 km to the east from Louisiana , about 70 km to the south from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 28.6 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The place was founded in 1831 under the name West Liberty and was part of the city of Liberty , separated by the Trinity River . A road and a ferry connected the two places. In 1854 the city was renamed Day's Town in honor of IC Day, a large landowner in the south of the city. The railway station was known as West Liberty , Days Station, and Dayton Station . When the first post office was established, the postal administration gave the place the name Dayton.

According to the 2000 census, 5,709 people lived here in 2,129 households and 1,517 families. The population density was 199.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 71.08% White, 19.69% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 6.67% other ethnic groups. About 1.40% were of mixed race and 10.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,129 households, 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.5% of them were married couples living together. 16.4% were single mothers and 28.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.18.
30.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7% 18 to 24, 28.2% 25 to 44, 20.2% 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 89.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 87.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,401 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,250. Males had a median income of $ 39,075 versus $ 21,068 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,139. 21.3% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 33.6% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.8% were 65 or older.
