Decatur is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Wise County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located about 65 km northwest of Fort Worth , just east of the center of the county, in northeast Texas, is about 65 km north of Oklahoma and has a total area of ​​18 km 2 with no significant body of water.

history

The place was founded in 1856 under the name Taylorsville, named after Zachary Taylor , a general and 12th President of the United States of America . In 1858 the place was renamed Decatur in honor of Stephen Decatur , a commodore and hero of the navy. The first post office and school were set up in 1857 and the first courthouse was built in 1860. In 1862, during the Civil War , five residents of the Unionist Peace Party were sentenced to death in Gainesville and hanged for membership in that party .
