DeKalb is the largest city in DeKalb County in the north of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 DeKalb had 39,018 inhabitants.

The name of the city
The city is named after the German-American general Johann von Kalb ( French : Johann de Kalb ). This was initially in French service before he served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence and fell in the Battle of Camden .

DeKalb lies at 41 ° 55'53 "north latitude and 88 ° 45'01" west longitude. The city extends over 32.7 km 2 , which consists almost entirely of land.
DeKalb is located on the Kishwaukee River , a tributary of the Rock River that flows into the Mississippi River at Rock Island .
In the center of DeKalb, Illinois State Route 23 , which runs in north-south direction, and Illinois State Route 38, which runs east to west, meet. South of the city is Interstate 88 , the shortest route between Chicago (105 km to the east) and the Quad Cities (186 km to the west). Two railway lines also meet in DeKalb.
Other special features
Industrially produced barbed wire was developed in DeKalb (hence “Barb-City”). Joseph Glidden's invention ( patented in the US in 1874 ) led to the founding of the Barb Fence Company of De Kalb, Illinois . Glidden died in DeKalb in 1906.
Demographic data
The 2000 census identified 39,018 residents. These were distributed to 13,081 households in 6,566 families. The population density was 1,194.7 / km 2 . There were 13,619 buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 417.0 / km 2 .
The population in 2000 was 73.00% White , 9.08% African American , 0.24% Native American , 4.62% Asian, and 4.48% other. 2.09% stated that they descended from at least two of these groups. Hispanics who declared themselves to be members of more of the named groups made up 9.04% of the population.
16.9% were under 18 years of age, 39.2% between 18 and 24, 23.8% between 25 and 44, 12.0% between 45 and 64 years and 8.1% 65 and older. The average age was 23 years. Statistically, there were 97.9 men for every 100 women, and 96.1 for those over 18.
The median income per household was $ 35,153 and the median family income was $ 53,017. The average income for men was $ 36,255 and that of women was $ 26,422. The per capita income was $ 16,261. Around 9.0% of families and 21.3% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
