Michele De Lucchi (born November 8, 1951 in Ferrara ) is an Italian designer and architect .

Life

Michele De Lucchi studied architecture in Florence and, while still a student, founded the “Group Cavart” in Padua , which advocated radical design .

In the mid-1970s he taught industrial design at the University of Florence and became one of Ettore Sottsass's closest collaborators and friends . He was a member and co-founder of the Cavart , Alchimia and Memphis Group movements , whose experimental architectural views were directed against the design establishment of the time. Disguised as a Napoleonic general, the young architecture student stood guard in 1973 in front of the institution of the Milan Triennial and protested against too many superfluous products. In the 1980s, De Lucchi designed post-modern furniture , home accessories and laminate for the “ young and wild ” . In 1988 he founded his own “Studio De Lucchi”. Before that, in 1979 he worked as a design consultant for the Olivetti company , where he was appointed chief designer in 1992. In 1998 he founded the company "amdl" with offices in Milan and Rome .

Michele De Lucchi was appointed Professor of Design and Art at the University of Venice in 2001 and received an honorary doctorate from Kingston University in 2006 for his efforts to improve the quality of life .

In addition to numerous exhibitions in the Museo Diocesano d'Ivrea, the Triennale di Milano, the Permanente di Milano, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma or the Neues Museum Berlin, his work can also be found in the permanent collection of the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Michele De Lucchi's most famous designs include the timeless “Tolomeo lamp”, which he designed for Artemide together with Giancarlo Fassina in 1987 , the “Lido” sofa and the “Oceanic” lamp (both for Memphis in 1981), the office utensils Segmenti for Kartell (1988), the fax OFX1000 and the notebook “Echos 20” (both 1995), as well as the printer “Art Jet 20” (1999) for Olivetti .

In addition to buildings for Deutsche Bank and the Frankfurt travel center of Deutsche Bahn , Michele De Lucchi also designed buildings for several Italian banks, whose corporate image he thus shaped in the long term. He designed computers for Olivetti, table lamps for Artemide, doorknobs for Valli Columbo, tape dispensers for Pelikan , chairs, vases and office furniture and furnished exhibitions, banks in Germany and apartment houses in Japan.

De Lucchi's penchant for color and playfulness is particularly evident in his designs for everyday objects and furniture such as the “Kristall” side table, which he designed for Memphis in 1981 and which is reminiscent of a four-legged animal. One example of his playful designs is the well-known Tolemeo desk lamp , which was awarded the Compasso d'Oro . His customers include Vistosi , Haworth , Fontana Arte , Artemide , RB Rossanan , Arflex , Acerbis and Bodum .
