Deacon Blue is a British band formed in Glasgow in 1985.

history

In 1982 youth club leader and teacher Ricky Ross joined bassist Ewan Vernal and the band Woza. The band was only known in the Glasgow area and played in the opening act for the Waterboys , but could not win a record deal. After Woza broke up in 1983, Ross continued to write songs, founded a new band with Vernal in 1985 and brought James Prime into the band on keyboards, who had already briefly played for Altered Images . The name "Deacon Blue" is borrowed from the title Deacon Blues by the band Steely Dan from their album Aja .

Muff Winwood , 1986 A&R manager at CBS Records , signed the band for the record label. In November 1986, recordings began for the Jon Kelly- produced debut album Raintown . Ross' girlfriend and future wife Lorraine McIntosh, who only became a permanent member of Deacon Blue in 1988, also sang on the album. In March 1987 the single Dignity was released, in May of the same year the album. Both could not place themselves in the charts , despite prominent guest musicians on the album, such as Chris Rea and members of Londonbeat .

In 1988 the single Dignity was re-released and reached number 31 in the UK Top 40. The debut album, from which the single came, also placed in the British album charts in 1991, reached number 14 and received an award with a platinum record. With When Will you (Make my Telephone Ring) in a new version and Chocolate Girl , two more singles were released and Deacon Blue went on tour with Fairground Attraction in the summer of 1988 . In October the single Real Gone Kid was successful at home. The single reached number 8 in the UK Top 40. The second album, When the World Knows Your Name , released in March 1989 and again produced by Jon Kelly, reached the top of the charts in Great Britain and number 56 in Germany, as well as two platinum records.

In 1990 the band took part in the Big Day in Glasgow in front of 250,000 spectators and Ross was in charge of the charity record The Tree and the Bird and the Fish and the Bell , which was recorded on the occasion of the photographer Oskar Marzaroli who died in 1988 . The photographer took the cover photo Cityscapes - Looking South From Park Terrace (1960) for the critically acclaimed debut album Raintown, compared to Prefab Sprout . In 1990 CBS released a compilation album called Ooh Las Vegas , which was awarded a gold record by the British Phono Association.

In 1991 the album Fellow Hoodlums was recorded again with producer Jon Kelly, but in a recording studio in Paris, and released on Columbia Records , which brought in three more chart singles with Your Swaying Arms , Twist and Shout and Closing Time . In 1993 Columbia released the studio album Whatever you say, say Nothing , and in 1994 the compilation Our Town - The Greatest Hits of Deacon Blue , which was awarded two platinum records the following year .

After breaking up in 1994, Ross released several solo albums. Deacon Blue reunited with the same line-up in 1999 and released other albums. In June 2004 guitarist Graeme Kelling died of pancreatic cancer. In 2012 Edsel released the album The Hipsters .

Ricky Ross also wrote songs for other artists. He wrote on High for James Blunt , on I'm All Over It for Jamie Cullum and for Will Young , KT Tunstall and Emma Bunton . With his wife Lorraine he forms the duo RossMcIntosh. Ross hosts Another Country radio show for BBC Radio Scotland .
