action

The young Mihail worked as a zoo keeper in the city for many years and saved a modest sum of money. Now he is returning to his home village on the Black Sea to live there. His first path leads him to his mother's house, who lives there with a new partner in simple circumstances and runs a small restaurant. Mihail met his sister Fauna there for the first time, who also lives in the small house. The mother's friend is skeptical and hostile towards Mihail. Since there is no room for him in the house, he moves into his late father's small fisherman's hut, which is located away from the village on an idyllic tributary of the Danube .

Fauna quickly becomes friends with her lost brother and spends more and more time with him - much to the suspicion of the villagers, her mother and his friend. And Mihail also felt the rejection of the village. Nevertheless, he does not allow himself to be dissuaded from his plan to settle in his old home and buys a large amount of wood to build a house on stilts on the water. Fauna helps him and they decide to move in there together.

The village is in great turmoil at these plans; the pressure on Mihail and Fauna increases, but the two continue to work on their wooden house. When Fauna moves out of the house, there is an argument with her mother's boyfriend. On the way to Mihail, he pulls her behind a building and rapes her. Fauna find shelter in Mihail's fisherman's hut and are looked after by him. The two approach carefully.

Fauna's uncle , who also lives in the village, does not want to cut off contact with his niece and helps them both with the construction of the house. He gives Mihail among other things, a Reuse for fishing . Fauna now lives with Mihail and the two continue to work on the building. One day Mihail catches a large number of fish. He drives into the village and wants to take Fauna's mother and her boyfriend to dinner. The two refuse, whereupon he invites the other residents of the restaurant to join him. Many of those approached come and celebrate the big catch. When Fauna wants to go to the new building, she is followed by three young men from the village. They also don't like the fact that she lives with Mihail. Another attack occurs on the footbridge to the house. Mihail hears her screams and wants to help fauna. But he is fatally injured by the men with a knife and falls into the water.

criticism

On arte, Julien Welter describes the film as “undoubtedly the happiest” work by Mundruczó. He praises the "contemplative moment" with which the director films the couple doing their craft work. At the same time, from his point of view, the film is “never dull, but always filled with the greatest care”. Other voices criticize the “sparseness and simplicity of the plot”. Eddie Cockrel writes in Variety that "some visitors would find the film unfathomably profound, while others would only experience it as dust-dry". The Swiss website art-tv comes to the positive conclusion: “Reduced to the essentials, this drama captivates by two outsiders, especially through the unsaid and the invisible.” And awards 4.5 out of 5 film pearls. Cinema magazine is similarly positive : "Abysses lurk behind the grandiose optics".

Awards

The feature film was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes in 2008 . In the same year he also received the Don Quixote Prize of the Féderation Internationale des Ciné-Clubs at the Cottbus Film Festival , the Golden Film Role and the Prize for the best music of the Hungarian Film Week .
