The Democratic Party ( Bulgarian Демократическа партия ), or DP for short, is one of the oldest political parties in Bulgaria . It was founded in 1895 as the successor to the left wing of the old Liberal Party (Bulgarian Либерална Партия) led by Petko Karawelows . The first chairman was Petko Karavelov. Most of their leaders had studied in the West or were pro-Western. The newspaper Prjapowez ( Bulgar . "Пряпорец") was considered their organ.

history

In 1905 a wing of the party split, which then founded the Radical Democratic Party . In 1941, the party rejected the offer of the Bulgarian Communist Party to join the Patriotic Front coalition (Bulgarian Отечествен фронт). In 1947 it was then banned.

On December 19, 1989, the Demokratičeska Partija was launched again. She joined the opposition alliance, United Democratic Forces .

In the 2009 parliamentary elections , the party leadership spoke out in support of the coalition of the two parties of the same name " LIDER - Nowoto Wreme " without a decision by the party assembly . This prompted some prominent members of the party, who were dissatisfied with this decision, to submit an election recommendation for the Blue Coalition and to demand the resignation of the party leadership.

The DP was involved in the government several times:

  • 1901-1902
  • 1908-1911
  • 1918
  • 1931-1934
  • 1944
  • 1991-1992
  • 1997-2000

The DP became a member of the European People's Party in 1991 , but is no longer a member.
