Denis Alexandrowitsch Popow ( Russian Денис Александрович Попов ; born February 4, 1979 in Novorossiysk ) is a Russian football player . He currently stands at Premjer league -Absteiger FC Khimki under contract. His most successful times were the first years of the 21st century, when he was once Russian cup winner and once champion with CSKA Moscow and five-time Russian national player between 2001 and 2003 . In 2008 he was the top scorer in the second Russian division, the 1st division .

Career

Popov turned professional in 1996 at the Chernomorets club from his hometown Novorossiysk . He immediately became a regular in the second team in the 3rd division , but also made two appearances in the upper division in 1996 . In 1997 he played for 3rd division Kuban . In 1998 he went back to Chernomorets in the highest Russian league, where he remained, however, more supplementary player than star. Only through the sale of the old top performers of the clubs around the turn of the millennium did he become a key player, which drew the attention of the major Moscow clubs to him, and finally switched to CSKA Moscow for the 2001 season.

At CSKA he quickly matured to become a national player, in the summer of 2001 he made his first two international appearances against Luxembourg and Greece . In the following two years three more appearances in the national team followed. Popow scored no goal and played less than half of the game time.

With CSKA he was runner- up in 2002 and Russian champion in 2003 and won the trophy twice, but left the club after a few match days of the 2004 season because he no longer fit into the new coach's concept. After two more years with Premjer league club FK Kuban Krasnodar , he was sorted out from the Krasnodar squad and loaned to various clubs; first to his hometown club Chernomorets Novorossiysk , then in 2006 to the Belarusian record champions Dinamo Minsk and for the 2007 season to the Premjer league team Spartak Nalchik .

In 2008 Popov played in the 1st Russian Division , first for Chernomorets Novorossiysk and after a summer move for Torpedo Moscow , with 24 goals he was the top scorer. Since 2009 he has been under contract with FK Chimki , with whom he was relegated from the Premjer League on 2009.
