Deniz Göktürk

Deniz Göktürk (* 1963 in Istanbul ) is a German Germanist , essayist and literary translator of German and Turkish origin.

Life

Göktürk is the daughter of Aksit Göktürk, a Turkish professor of English literature, and Pia Angela Göktürk (née Lorenzi), a German sociologist and linguist whose parents came from Vienna (mother) and South Tyrol (father).

She graduated from the German School in Istanbul in 1980. She studied in Konstanz , Norwich and Berlin , where she received her doctorate in German literature in 1995. In the same year she left Germany ("the government has been slow to accept foreigners as Germans") to begin teaching at the University of Southampton in England. As early as the early 1990s, she had published numerous academic articles, essays and books on cultural history in Germany; She was particularly interested in the topics of migration and film history.

Göktürk also wrote the section on "Migration and Cinema" in the standard work published by Carmine Gino Chiellino on the subject of intercultural literature in Germany. A manual (2000).

As a literary translator from Turkish, she also translated a. A. Works by Aras Örens , a well-known German writer who works in his native Turkish, even after she went to Southampton for the first publications in German, e.g. B. Berlin Savignyplatz (1995) or The Secret of the Clock Tower (1996).

She also drew together with Zafer Şenocak as co-editor for a German-language anthology with Turkish stories Every word belongs to a heaven: Turkey literary (1991) responsible.

From 2000 onwards, Göktürk began to publish more and more in English. In 2002, she co- edited an extensive standard work on German cinema in England, The German Cinema Book .

Meanwhile, she is also a university professor of German at the University of California at Berkeley, offering courses on topics such as "Transnational Cinemas", "Comedy & Community", "World Cinema / Global Cities", "Nation & Representation".
