Deniz Sözbir

Deniz Sözbir (born February 27, 1981 in Herdecke ) is a German-Turkish filmmaker. He is the cameraman of the award-winning documentary Angelus Mortis (2007). His first own longer feature film based on his own script Gurbet - Fremder received the Caligari Prize of the State Institute for Communication in 2009 .

Life

Deniz Sözbir was born near Dortmund in Herdecke / Ruhr. His mother is German, his father is Turkish. When he was four years old, he and his parents moved to Turkey / Aegean region. He started primary school in the small fishing village of Datca. Then they settled in the fishing village of Dalyan and went to school there. Before returning to Kiel / Schleswig-Holstein, where he finished elementary school, he lived with his grandparents in Istanbul for a year . In Kiel he attended grammar school for two years, then secondary school. In a Turkish boarding school he passed his Abitur at the age of 18 and then began to study Sinology at Ankara University. The urge to continue his studies in Germany eventually led him to Berlin at 19, where he studied film and Turkish studies at the Free University of Berlin. At the same time he worked as an assistant director. Starting in 2002, she worked as a director in the field of short films as well as some scripts. Since studying directing at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg from 2005 , he has also been shooting in the fields of advertising and music video.

In 2007 he was the cameraman of the internationally performed documentary Angelus Mortis by Simon Ritzler about a surviving Mengele victim. The film received two awards from the Wiesbaden Film Evaluation Center and one award nomination.

He created Sözbir's own award-winning project Gurbet - Fremder in 2009 on behalf of BR with well-known actors such as Burak Yiğit , Meret Becker , Hussi Kutlucan , Özay Fecht , Aykut Kayacık and Christine Neubauer . The film, shot in Istanbul , is about the deportation of a migrant child to the country of origin of its parents, with which it has hardly any relationship.
