The Ministry of Health , in Māori Manatū Hauora , is a ministry and Public Service Department in New Zealand that is responsible for the country's health policy.

history

The forerunner of the Ministry of Health was the Department of Public Health , whose legal basis was created on October 13, 1900 with the Public Health Act 1900 and the Department was founded the following year. Previously, the Board of Health dealt with health issues. Responsibility for the Māori concerns regarding their health was not transferred to the Department of Public Health until 1906.

In 1922 the department was renamed the Department of Health and was only given the status of a ministry in 1992 through restructuring and renaming to the Ministry of Health . The role of the Ministry of Health in overseeing public health was laid down in the Health Act 1956 .

minister

Chris Hipkins of the New Zealand Labor Party has been Minister of Health for the ministry since July 2, 2020 . He replaced his party colleague David Clark , who took a trip to the beach during the lockdown in the Corona crisis and did not adhere to the restrictions imposed by the government.

tasks and goals

The aim of the ministry is defined as promoting and protecting the health and well-being of the people of New Zealand. This results in the following generally defined tasks:

  • leading the New Zealand health and disability system,
  • advising the Minister of Health and the government on health and disability issues
  • purchasing direct from a range of national health and disability support services,
  • providing health information and payment services for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

To this end, the ministry works with all other ministries and public service agencies in the country.
