The unwilling dragon (original title: The Reluctant Dragon , alternative title: Walt Disney's Secrets ) is a film by the Walt Disney Studios from 1941 that combines several cartoon elements with a real film framework. It was the second of eight full-length Disney films made in the 1940s that consist of several short stories instead of telling a continuous plot.

action

The film follows the humorist Robert Benchley on a tour of the Disney studios, where he wants to sell Walt Disney the idea of making a film out of Kenneth Grahame's story The Reluctant Dragon . On the tour he meets u. a. on the Donald Duck spokesman Clarence Nash and sees in the various departments how stories are developed, drawings are made, the drawings are filmed and set to music. When he finally meets Walt Disney personally at the end of the film , he has already filmed the dragon story.

The film contains the following cartoon segments:

  • Baby Weems: Based on (partly slightly animated) storyboard drawings, the story is told of a child prodigy whose fame removes him from his parents until a serious illness makes him a normal baby again.
  • Goofy's Riding School (How to Ride): Goofy's first How to ... cartoon.
  • Casey Junior: A scene cut from the film Dumbo is used to show how the noises are recorded. (This gives the impression that the films were set to music afterwards. In reality, however, the sound is recorded before the drawings are made.)
  • Old MacDonald Duck : Donald Duck uses this film as an example to explain how a movement is created from different drawings.
  • The Reluctant Dragon: A poem-writing dragon has to change its nature in order to coexist with the neighboring village. He and Sir Giles have mock battles to try to convince the villagers that the dragon is dangerous.

Publications

In German-speaking countries, only parts of the entire film are available on video and DVD so far. The unwilling dragon appeared on the DVD Magic Fairy Tale World, Part 6 on January 29, 2004 and Goofy's Riding School on November 25, 2004 on the DVD Sport, Fun, Superstars . Two scenes in which you see Clarence Nash dubbing Donald and Donald explaining how to make animated films can be found as a bonus on the DVD Walt Disney Treasures: Donald through the ages 1934–1941, released on July 22, 2004 . In addition, the sequence Casey Junior was released on March 11, 2010 as bonus material on the DVD Dumbo - For the 70th Anniversary under the title The sound design of “The Dragon Against Will” .
