The flea market of Madame Claire (original title: La dernière folie de Claire Darling ) is a film drama by Julie Bertuccelli . The main roles are played by Catherine Deneuve as Marie-Claire Darling and Chiara Mastroianni as her daughter. The film is based on the novel Faith Bass Darling's Last Garage Sale by Lynda Rutledge.

action

At the beginning of the film there are shots of the property when both Claire and her daughter Marie are still relatively young. Among other things, a pendulum clock is shown , which has played a role over and over again in the course of history.

Claire is old and partially demented during the main story . She lives alone in a stately home in a small town in France. Your house is full of antiques as well as old music boxes and figures. One night she woke up and had an apparition that she learned would die the following night. She then organized a well-frequented flea market , where she sells her possessions for little money. Martine, her daughter's childhood friend, runs an antiques shop and saves the valuable figures and furniture by load. She called Marie, who then meets her mother for the first time in many years. Her daughter Marie broke away from Claire at a young age.

In interspersed flashbacks it becomes clear that Claire was married and has two children named Martin and Marie. Martin was killed in an explosives accident in the family's quarry. Claire's husband died after a violent marital dispute over the death of their son. Claire did not get help for her dying husband at the time and then accused herself of that.

Then Claire abruptly ends the sale. Later she collapses on the street and is brought to the hospital by the ambulance alarmed by her daughter. Marie visits her mother, she has since found Claire's grandmother's ring, which the two had argued about. Claire and her daughter make up. However, Claire does not remain in treatment for long, but leaves the hospital on her own initiative. In the evening she goes obliviously on the fairground bumper cars . Then she finds her way back home.

There she puts on the water for tea, but does not properly ignite the flames under the kettle: gas flows out. After a short time, Claire passed out as a result. Fireworks are just starting outside; a glowing particle falls into the chimney of the house and ignites the air-gas mixture, causing the entire building to explode.

publication

The film, produced by Les Films du Poisson , was shown at several film festivals in 2018. The cinema premiere in France was on February 6, 2019. Madame Claire's flea market came to German cinemas on May 2, 2019.

criticism

filmdienst.de writes: "In the prominent adaptation of the novel, reality, memories and daydreams mix in a virtuoso manner, but the exquisitely furnished film is unable to breathe any real life into the main characters." Cinema finds that Julie Bertuccelli "[with] impressive sovereignty [... ] the different time levels flow into each other ”and that the film impresses“ with its narrative elegance ”. "History itself", on the other hand, "can only captivate to a limited extent."
