occupation

Der Läufer is a Swiss film from 2018 with Max Hubacher and Annina Euling , directed by the Swiss Hannes Baumgartner . The film is based on a true Swiss criminal case in the early 2000s and relocates the gloomy double life of Bernese top athlete and chef Mischa Ebner into a current context. According to producer Stefan Eichenberger , it is a fictional film that is based on the real case, but out of consideration for the victims and the people involved, it is not just a retelling.

content

Jonas is a successful long-distance runner who trains for the Olympic marathon and is perceived by those around him as friendly and extremely helpful. He works as a cook and wants to move in with his girlfriend Simone soon. After a failed title defense at the "Langenfelder" (an allusion to the Frauenfeld gun run ), Jonas catches up with his traumatized childhood and the suicide of his beloved brother more and more. Unable to carry his psychological strain outwards and to look for help, the protagonist develops a tragic double life.

production

The film was made by Stefan Eichenberger and Ivan Madeo from CONTRAST FILM Bern in co-production with Swiss radio and television , SRG SSR and Teleclub . Eichenberger has received several awards for his work in “Neuland” and “ Heimatland ”, and his short film “ Parvaneh ” was even nominated for an Oscar. Eichenberger has also been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since the end of June 2017 .

19-year-old Luna Wedler from Zurich was named “European Shooting Star 2018” at the Berlinale and plays the supporting role of Laura. The protagonist Jonas is played by Max Hubacher , who was awarded the Swiss Film Prize in 2012 ( Der Verdingbub ) and 2018 ( Mario ) .

The film premiered in August 2018 at the Locarno Festival , was shown in September 2018 as part of the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Zurich Film Festival , and was released in Swiss cinemas on October 4, 2018. In January 2019, the film was shown for the first time in Germany at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival . The Swiss TV premiere took place on June 10, 2020 on SRF 2 .

Reviews and grossing results

In a review by OutNow.CH it is said that the film is pretty close because of its subject matter, and one tries in vain to put together the exact motives behind the acts: “Ultimately, the real horror is that acts of violence cannot always be explained, even though we ourselves are as a kind of consolation. ”The fact that you can't just put the character of Jonas in a perpetrator-profile cliché makes the film so indigestible.

After Der Läufer was released in Swiss cinemas at the beginning of October 2018, it had the best theatrical release of a Swiss film in 2018.
