The cry of death (Original title: Scream Blacula Scream ) is an American Blaxploitation - Horror of American International Pictures from the year 1973. He is the only sequel to the film Blacula and his characters. Both are based on motifs from the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker .
action
The dying voodoo priestess Mama Loa chooses Lisa Fortier as her successor, the son Willis Daniels, injured in his vanity, conjures up Prince Mamuwalde, also known as Blacula. For this purpose, he has specially acquired his bones . Immediately afterwards, he becomes his first victim and turns himself into a vampire . The vampires' thirst for blood demands more and more victims, be it close people or chance encounters. This makes Justin Carter, a former police officer, collector of African artwork and familiar with the occult , suspicious and he begins an investigation. Gloria, Lisa's friend, dies at a party. Later she wakes up as the undead in front of Lisa's eyes and only escapes her through Blacula's intervention. While Sheriff Harley Dunlop finally puts together a group of police officers to storm the vampire property, Blacula hopes to be released from his curse of living as a vampire with the help of Lisa's voodoo powers . In addition, there was a flashback of the key scene from Blacula at the beginning of the film . The policemen manage to stake many vampires with high losses . The ritual to free Blacula is interrupted and Lisa is horrified by Blacula, who becomes more and more estranged from her and his actual self in an orgy of violence . Finally, Lisa kills Blacula using the voodoo doll made for the ritual .
background
Blacula, the former African prince Mamuwalde, is the leader of the vampires. As a character, he exudes dignity through his tall figure, his elegant, antiquated cloak and his eloquence. Unlike the other vampires, his sense of justice or his love for certain people keep him from succumbing to the thirst for blood as a vampire as pure instinct . He is also entitled to abilities that cannot be seen in the other vampires, e.g. B. to be able to transform into a bat . The film - a B-movie - plays with the classic characteristics of vampires as a horror effect: bitten people also turn into vampires, vampires have no reflection or cannot be photographed. They are fought with the crucifix or have to be staked. They shy away from daylight.
As a Blaxploitation film, the shown key scene from Blacula is significant, according to which a white vampire condemns Blacula to his existence as a vampire through his bite. Nonetheless, he often behaves with dignity, rejecting a prostitute and teaching her pimps. Only at the end of the film does he tragically lose touch with himself and his friends in an escalation of violence with prototypically uniformed and helmeted white police officers.
criticism
"Partly bloodthirsty horror film with some unsavory qualities, but which primarily makes you laugh."
