Michael Conrad

Michael Conrad (born October 16, 1925 in New York City , New York - † November 22, 1983 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Conrad began his career in 1954 with an extra role in the monumental film The Gladiators . He then regularly had small film roles and guest appearances in numerous successful television series from the 1950s to 1980s. In 1965 he was on the side of Charlton Heston in come the Normans to see three years later alongside Peter Ustinov in the Disney - Comedy Blackbeard's Ghost . In 1969 he played the role of Rollo in Sydney Pollack's Oscar- winning drama Only Horses Are Given the Gunshot . He had a major supporting role in the French - Italian crime film The Boss by Jean-Pierre Melville . He had one of his most prominent film roles alongside Burt Reynolds in The Hardest Mile as head coach Nate Scarboro ; in the remake in 2005 Reynolds took over this role.

From 1976 to 1977 he was seen in the crime series Delvecchio as the superior of the title character Sgt. Delvecchio . He achieved success and notoriety late in his career through the crime series Hill Street Police Station as Sergeant Phil Esterhaus , for which he received two Emmy Awards out of a total of four nominations . He died of cancer while filming the fourth season of the series. Conrad was married for a second time and had no children.
