The Secretary is a documentary film by the DEFA studio for newsreels and documentaries by Jürgen Böttcher from 1967 .

action

A lot of women work in the chemical combine Buna in Schkopau , including the party functionary Gerhard Grimmer, known by everyone as "The Secretary". The plant is very large and you can only get around properly with a bicycle. So you see Gerhard Grimmer for the first time in the film, wearing a simple jacket and a flat cap . Like the others, he has remained a worker, someone who speaks their language, even though he is now the SED party secretary .

Originally, Gerhard Grimmer began working in the mine when he was 15, the son of a miner's family . Here he worked until 1950 it was discovered that for health reasons he could no longer stay in the mining industry. Then he and his wife took over a new farmer's position that he got from the SED. But that was over again in 1952, because the agricultural production cooperatives were founded and as a comrade he had to be one of the first to join, even though he didn't want to. In 1957 he started working in carbide production at Buna. The work was so hard that he pondered and developed a machine that made the job easier and saved four workers. This has even been registered as a patent . Although the success was doubted by many, it brought millions in profit.

In 1961, Gerhard Grimmer came to the rubber processing section of the Buna combine as party secretary . 1000 employees, 700 of them women, work in 16 parts of the company in 3 shifts. He has to take care of these colleagues and not just the party members. His office, which he shares with the FDJ secretary , is simply furnished. But here he is to be found less often, as he is mostly at the focal points. When he came into this area, he first had to deal with rubber processing in order to have a say. Now he's ready to accept his opinion. At the beginning of the film he was concerned with the problem that many of the women do not want to be transferred to a new production area and prefer to quit. In conversation with the head of personnel, Gerhard Grimmer tries to stand up for these women and to find out what causes the rejection.

At the beginning of the shooting the secretary was reluctant to be filmed. But many positive comments from his colleagues convinced him to participate. He can be seen again and again in conversations with women. You know that he stands up for you. He is popular, takes care of the working atmosphere, the further training of women and is also a little bit psychologist .
