action

Hans-Dieter Mackprang, married for the second time and initially working as a teacher, now earns his living as a freelance toy manufacturer. Early in the morning he is visited by two detectives at the hotel where he stayed with his alleged fiancé Astrid Böhm, who inform him that an arrest warrant has been issued against him. He asserts that this must be a mistake, but is arrested anyway.

A flashback follows: Astrid met Mackprang months ago while visiting a local restaurant with her friend Elfriede and gave in to his flattery too quickly. The next evening, Mackprang meets the Dutch businessman Mijnheer Gruitmaans to show him his designs and models of new toys. However, the preliminary contract concluded in the Leipzig trade fair office of the state-owned foreign trade company Limex only obliges Gruitmaans to seek production opportunities in the Netherlands . Nevertheless, a few days later, Mackprang was already looking for donors "to finance several domestic and foreign patents up to 30,000  marks " in a newspaper advertisement .

Ludmilla Glogowsky, wealthy widow in a small town in the Erzgebirge , fell for this advertisement, wrote to Mackprang, the "serious inventor" visited her in her apartment soon after and promised her a lucrative return . She spontaneously agreed to give Mackprang an initial installment of 5,000 marks and paid him another 15,000 marks over the next few months. He uses the first 5,000 marks to reassure his patent engineer, to whom he owes a larger amount. However, he uses the greater part to satisfy personal needs. His actual activity as a toy developer takes a back seat. Time and again, the clever impostor succeeds in cheating his fellow citizens, including the 21-year-old bricklayer Wilfried Richter. Master furrier Strauss is persuaded by Mackprang to join his "company" as a partner and managing director. He overwrites his Moskvich in good faith as a partial security to Mr Roempke, who has granted Mackprang a loan. But he offers the car twice for purchase against payment of larger down payments and makes considerable profits by brokering further illegal car purchases. When he realizes that all the money is not enough to repay Roempke's loan on the agreed date, he even considers selling the tobacco shop to his former girlfriend Elfriede and its inventory without her knowledge. However, the result of the inventory is very unfavorable.

But even in this precarious situation, chance comes to Mackprang's aid. Through a newspaper advertisement, he learns that a scientific institute in the north of Germany is looking for a larger car in exchange for two Wartburgs . Since he was recently offered a Tatras in Thuringia , he wants to use it as an exchange object and later sell the two Wartburgs at inflated prices. However, he does not manage to get another 10,000 Marks from Mrs. Glogowsky because her son prevents her from handing over the money. Even though Mackpang does not have the amount he had calculated to buy the Tatra, he still writes a check for the amount. Now the criminal investigation is starting against him. Further financial manipulation becomes apparent. But he left his place of residence in a hurry. Because of the strong suspicion reasons and the existing danger of collusion it is issued arrest warrant .

The 36-year-old Hans-Dieter Mackprang had damaged 21 citizens - mostly through fraud - by a sum of 200,000 marks. Many witnesses had to be heard, and numerous bills and receipts had to be checked. Mackprang is sentenced to four years in prison by the district court for fraud in a particularly serious case and for continued price violation. He had to replace the damage caused.
