action

At the end of the 19th century, pirates led by the brutal privateer captain Sam Pau repeatedly made the port of Hong Kong unsafe. Therefore, Dragon Ma , a Coast Guard officer , is tasked with arresting the gang leader. But in order to be able to carry out the order, the latter has to work with the regular police, with whom he has had tangible disputes several times. During a training course he repeatedly got into disputes with his trainer Hong Tin-tsu (Yuen Biao) .

As Dragon Ma then unmasked a traitor and all must, as the police released them, he determined without the police on and sneaks with two confidants, the plump Tagedieb Fei and Hong Tin-tsu , the Pirate's Quarters one that focuses on a secret island located in the China Sea .

There they are currently holding a group of English prisoners in order to exchange them for weapons. When the intruders are discovered, a wild fight ensues, but in the end the good guys triumph and destroy the pirate headquarters. Dragon Ma even received an award from the police for his services to Hong Kong.

criticism

"A perfect mixture of brilliant action scenes and dry humor, which was degraded to puns in the miserable synchronization."

Remarks

  • The film also ran under the titles Pirate Patrol , Jackie Chan's Project A and Mark of the Dragon .
  • Highlights of the film are Chan's acrobatics on the clock tower, a bike chase and a mass brawl in a bar.
  • The scene in which Jackie climbs a bell tower and threatens to fall into the depths hanging on the hands of a clock is a reminiscence of Harold Lloyd and his classic film Skyscraper of all things! ( Safety Last ) from 1923. A similar climbing scene on the hands of a watch with Chan was used again in 2003 in Shanghai Knights . Three versions of the scene were filmed, two of which were used in the film, while the last was seen in outtakes at the end.
  • For the stunt at the clock, Chan actually fell into the depths, the fall itself was only slowed down by two awnings . He sustained a severe neck injury that almost cost him his life. This stunt had been planned for a long time, but it took Chan a long time to muster the necessary courage. Incredibly, he did it two more times because he was dissatisfied with the first fall.
  • Chan also broke his nose while filming.
  • The supporting actors Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao are old fellow actors of Jackie Chan who are part of his fixed torsion bar, with which he u. a. made the films in the Powerman series.
  • In the German version, Head Pirate Sam Pau was given a somewhat inappropriate-looking broad North German accent.

Awards

  • Hong Kong Film Awards 1984: Nomination for Jackie Chan (Best Actor) and Winner Best Action Photography.
