The Death of the White Horse is a 1985 film by Christian Ziewer .

content

The film deals with an episode of the peasant uprising from 1524 in Franconia . A conflict arises between a monastery and the simple rural population of the village belonging to the monastery when a new abbot turns out to be a tyrant. From the perspective of the rebellious peasants, the film shows euphorically how they occasionally manage to free themselves from bondage through the monastery. However, when the monastery calls in mercenaries to protect it, the peasant uprising is broken.

production

The film was shot in Langenzenn Abbey and in Schlaifhausen .

reception

The film was nominated for the 1985 Berlinale . After its performance at the Berlinale, however, it was judged very negatively by the critics, in particular the direction and dramaturgy were criticized. Due to the negative criticism, the film was released in a new cut version in autumn 1986.

The lexicon of international films found that the original version was "an attempt, impaired by weaknesses in direction and dramaturgy, to make history transparent for the present and people's fundamental questions". The LdIF described the new version as “stronger overall”.

The film-dienst also said: "The new version from 1986 removes some of the shortcomings of the film: it appears less as a historical-naturalistic reconstruction, but as a model-like, distanced reflection on the structures of power and political behavior."
