Dermot Clifford (born January 25, 1939 in Ballymacelligott , County Kerry ) is an Irish clergyman of the Catholic Church and Archbishop Emeritus of Cashel and Emly .

Life

Clifford attended Clogher National School and St. Brendan's College in Killarney . He then moved to St Patrick's College in Maynooth . There he graduated in 1960. Then Clifford went to the Pontifical Irish College in Rome , where he studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Lateran University for the next four years . Clifford was ordained a priest on February 22, 1964 .

From 1964 Clifford was a teacher and Dean of Disciple at St. Brendan's College in Killarney, where he taught until 1972. From 1972 to 1974 Clifford studied administrative economics and social science at the London School of Economics and graduated with a Masters. In 1974 he returned from London to Cork , where he got a job as a secretary in the local Roman Catholic diocese. From 1975 to 1981 Clifford was employed as a lecturer at University College Cork in social sciences. During this time, Clifford also served as chaplain at St. Mary of the Angels at Beaufort , a children's home for children with learning difficulties.

December 17, 1985 Clifford was by Pope John Paul II. To Coadjutor Bishop appointed the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly and received on 9 March the following year by Archbishop Thomas Morris , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi , and the Bishop of Kerry , Dermot O'Sullivan . He was also the parish priest of the Tipperary parish . On September 12, 1988, he succeeded Thomas Morris after his resignation in the office of Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. Clifford was the chairman of the Irish Bishops' Commission on Development Aid.

After the previous Bishop of Cloyne , John Magee , was released from his office on March 7, 2009 because of the poor handling in his diocese of allegations of child sexual abuse by Catholic dignitaries, he was removed from his office on the same day by Pope Benedict XVI. also appointed Apostolic Administrator sede plena by Cloyne and thus appointed head of this diocese. He resigned from this office on January 27, 2013 with the inauguration ( enthronement ) of the new Bishop of Cloyne, William Crean .

On November 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
