Deron Washington (born December 12, 1985 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American basketball player . He played in college for the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Virginia Tech team , before being selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 59th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft .

High school

Washington, who graduated from the National Christian Academy in Fort Washington , Maryland , is the son of Lionel Washington, a former NFL cornerback and Denise Washington, a former basketball player from Xavier University of Louisiana .

At the National Academy, Washington averaged 11.5 points per game as a junior and 65 threesomes overall, despite missing nine games with a broken wrist. Washington ended its senior season averaging 16.7 senior points, 10.0 rebounds, three assists and three blocks per game for the NCA.

After his high school graduation from the National Christian Academy, he decided for Virginia Tech, which had not reached the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament since the 1995-1996 season, and played there under the new head coach Seth Greenberg.

college

Freshman season

Washington was immediately familiar with the Hokies' system as a freshman , starting in 30 games in its first season. He finished the season as the second best individual player with a field throw rate of 47.6% and 4.6 rebounds. He also scored 7.9 points per game, 1.0 assists per game, 1.0 blocks per game and 1.0 steals per game.

The Hokies finished the season with an overall record of 16-14 and a record of 8-8 in the ACC . They lost in the first round of the ACC tournament and later played in the National Invitational Tournament. They defeated their first opponent, Temple University , with 60-50 and then lost to the University of Memphis in the second round with 83-62.

Sophmore season

In his second season Washington was fourth best scorer with 10.5 points per game and third best rebounder with 5.0 rebounds per game.

His best game statistically was against the University of Mount Saint Mary’s , where he hit eight of ten field throws and scored 24 points. In addition, the sophomore achieved new career bests with ten rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

Virginia Tech finished the season with an aggregate record of 14-16 and 4-12 in the ACC. In the first round of the ACC tournament they lost to the Virginia Cavaliers .

Junior season

In his junior season , Washington was the team's second-best scorer with 12.0 points per game and an average of 6.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

The Hokies finished the 2006-2007 season with a record of 22-12 and in the ACC with a record of 10-6. So they achieved their first NCAA tournament participation since the 1995-1996 season.

Virginia Tech had to play against Illinois in the first round . The Hokies were 13 points behind with eight minutes to go, but still won 54-52 in the end. Virginia Tech then lost in the second round against the Southern Illinois Salukis ( Southern Illinois University Carbondale ) 63-48.

Senior season

Washington ended its senior season with career highs of 13.5 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game. The Hokies finished the season on a 22-14 record. Virginia Tech took part in the NIT and reached the quarterfinals.
