Location of Desmerciereskoog in Schleswig-Holstein

Desmerciereskoog is a part of the municipality Reußenköge , district of North Friesland . The Koog was diked in 1767 as the second Koog of the so-called Bredstedter Werk by the nobleman of Huguenot descent Jean Henri Desmercières and, probably at the suggestion of the first Koogs inspector, named after its builder. It measures around 360 hectares.

topography

The Koog is part of the North Frisian Marshes and is located in the central North Frisia. The connection to the regional trunk road network is via a connecting road (formerly Chaussee ), which branches off in the village area of the neighboring municipality of Struckum on federal road 5 . This country road runs through the Koog in an east-west direction. Halfway in the Koog, a connecting road branches off to the north in the direction of Bredstedt, the so-called Mittelweg.

The area is extremely sparsely populated. Most of the land used for agriculture is now largely reserved for agricultural production. According to his age, he is counted among the young marshes. The soil is classified as Kalkmarsch .

history

Before colonization

After Jean Henry Desmercières dyed the neighboring Sophien-Magdalenen-Kooges, a small bay the size of today's Kooges in the area of the Königstief, a side low of the so-called Buttergatt , remained unsealed. Since the growth here did not seem to be sufficient for a dike, Desmercières initially decided not to use the dike. He knew that time would work for him and ensure that the foreland would grow further in a short time. This security then also came about, so that the embankment of this small remaining bay could be started within 24 years. The basis of this dike was also the Octroy of the Danish King Christian VI. for the Bredstedt plant .

Embankment

The 2.2 km long connecting dike between Sophien-Magdalenen-Koog and Hattstedter Neuerkoog was finally drawn between 1765 and 1767 . The final dike was unique at the time. It was the first dike with a significantly flatter profile towards the lake. As of the end of August 1767, the first lands were offered for sale. The point at which the new dike meets the older dike with a steeper profile is said to be one of the locations that Theodor Storm describes in more detail in his novella Der Schimmelreiter , based on research by local historian August-Wilhelm Geerkens .

Drainage and settlement

The drainage of the Kooges was also planned by Desmercières. The rainwater was and will be diverted into the Arlau by creating two gullies flowing in north-south direction in the east and west of the Koog .

The settlement was carried out by selling the land to the highest bidder. For this purpose, the entire Koog was divided into 33 plots. 32 of them were 20 demat in size  . The further subdivision of these areas was the responsibility of the buyer, who was responsible for creating the trenches and plots. If necessary, the yard was also built on a section of the area.

Economic structure

The economic structure is, comparable to that in the neighboring Kögen, characterized by intensive agricultural use. The main focus of the business is arable farming . This is now being supplemented by various commercial enterprises. The so-called Angel Square is a tourist attraction in Desmerciereskoog. In addition, there is a painter who is known in regional circles of artists based in the Koog. Your studio is located directly at the entrance to the village when coming from the direction of Struckum. Infrastructural facilities to satisfy economic needs are not available in the Koog.

Agriculture

Agriculture was of particular importance for the development of the Kooge. Today, the areas are cultivated by farmers resident in the Koog and those from neighboring areas. In the meantime there are only two full-time farms (with farms) left. One of the farmers sells his products seasonally directly from his own farm shop. Potatoes are available all year round, and strawberries and asparagus (including the common by-products) in spring / summer.

There are few commercially active companies. One of these deals with the marketing of effective microorganisms . A tax advisor is also based in the Koog.

The generation of renewable energy is also of great importance today. There are eight wind turbines in the Koog . These are assigned to two local community wind farms and offer a large number of citizens of the community another economic pillar. There are also photovoltaic systems for electricity generation on some farm buildings.

Desmerciereskoog Engelsplatz Monument.JPG

The establishment of the so-called Engelsplatz was a private initiative of two Koogs residents. A monument in the form of an angel was erected from marble stone from the Ticino Alps and set up on a freely accessible meadow all year round . The place of the so-called two-unity angel can be used as a picnic area and other excursion site. The organization of wedding celebrations on Engelsplatz is also taken over by the initiators.
