The Arlau (Danish: Arlå ) is a 37 km long river in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein , which flows into the North Sea and belongs to the Eider river basin district .
course
The Arlau rises southeast of Sollwitt in North Frisia . It divides the goesharde into north and south goesharde. Initially, it flows a few kilometers south and runs along the municipal boundary between Behrendorf and Bondelum . About 3 km southeast of Behrendorf its course changes in a westerly direction. The Arlau then flows south past Viöl and north past Arlewatt , crosses the Hattstedtermarsch , and finally flows into the North Sea at Beltringharder Koog on Holmer Siel .
Hydraulic engineering in the estuary
The runoff into the North Sea is regulated by a sluice and the Arlau reservoir in front of it in Beltringsharder-Koog. The two hydraulic engineering systems also protect the inhabited low-lying hinterland of the Hattstedtermarsch from the ingress of North Sea water during a storm surge . The storage basin makes an additional pumping station on Holmer Siel - in contrast to the old Arlau lock in the Hattstedtermarsch - superfluous.
Tributaries

- Gramsholmer Bek ,
- Imme ,
- Eckstockau ,
