Detlef Karsten (born January 18, 1958 in Hanover ; † January 17, 2017 in Verl ) was a German contemporary artist.

biography

Detlef Karsten studied art education and art history at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1979 to 1985. From 1985 to 1988 he continued his studies in painting at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main . After several art appearances - so-called performances - and art actions in cooperation with other artists and institutions in which he combined different types of art, the artist shifted more to painting and sculpture. In 1988 Detlef Karsten started working as a freelance artist in Wiesbaden.

After Karsten ran an art studio in Wiesbaden , he relocated his life and work to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza in the 1990s . More works were created here in collaboration with the artist Jutta Gruhlke . In 2000 Karsten opened his studio in Ibiza in an old elementary school.

Since the beginning of 2007, Detlef Karsten lived and worked in the small town of Verl near Gütersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia . The life in the rural milieu resulted in pictures of a very special expressiveness.
