Detlef Müller (after changing name Metin Mert ; born May 21, 1965 in Duisburg ) is a former Turkish soccer player and goalkeeping coach of German origin.

Career

The future goalkeeper did not begin his career in goal, but as a field player for SV Wanheim 1900 in the south of Duisburg. Due to the failure of the then regular goalkeeper, Detlef Müller was put in goal during a game. That was the beginning of his football career, which has always been uphill from then on. The other stations during his youth were Duisburg 1900, VfB Homberg from where he then moved to VfL Bochum and signed his first contract. In 1985 the 20-year-old from Duisburg moved to Westfalia Herne in the Oberliga Westfalen , where he "quickly became a crowd favorite thanks to his open manner and daring parades". With the club and coach Pedro Milašinčić he was 1986/87 third and 1987/88 runner-up in the league. Already in his time in Herne he was credited with always giving a little more than others in training and games. He played in Herne until 1988, when he was approached by former Dortmund professional Erdal Keser while playing beach soccer on a vacation in Turkey and received offers from the Turkish league and spontaneously accepted them. At the age of 25 Detlef Müller switched to Sarıyer SK Istanbul. He established himself in the Turkish league and quickly became the darling of the masses who worshiped him as the "Panther of the Bosporus". After five years, the former Westfalia Herne goalkeeper became a Turkish citizen, converted to Islam and took the name Metin Mert . From 1995 to 1997 he played for Trabzonspor and took part with the club in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup . After two first wins, they failed at the later title holder FC Schalke 04 . From 1997 to 2002 he was under contract with Kocaelispor and won the Turkish Cup in 2002. At the age of 39, he was in goal for the second division team Antalyaspor.

The Istanbul Goethe-Institut sums up the German-Turkish football transfer:

Kalli Feldkamp, Sigi Held, Toni Schumacher, Rüdiger Abramczik and the legendary Detlef Müller (today Metin Mert), who advanced from the goalkeeper at Westfalia Herne to the“ Panther of the Bosporus ”and stayed here - they personified their status as a football hero on the bench and the proverbial German-Turkish friendship on the Bosporus. "

In Turkey he played in 255 league games from 1990 to 2004.
