Deuteronomium is a Finnish Christian death metal band from Jyväskylä , which was founded in 1993, disbanded in 2001 and re-founded in 2006. The name is derived from the Latin name of the 5th book of Moses , a Latinized version of the Greek name Δευτερονόμιον 'second law'.

history

The band was founded in 1993 by the brothers Manu (bass, vocals) and Jarno Lehtinen (drums). A short time later they found two suitable guitarists in Miika Partala and Tapio Laakso, who completed the line-up. In the fall of 1993, the band went into the studio to record their first demo Paths of Righteousness . The demo came out in December, shortly after Laukaa's first appearance on December 3rd. In early 1994, drummer Lehtinen and guitarist Laakso left the band. Then guitarist Kalle Paju joined the band. This was followed by a gig on May 31, with guitarist Partala playing the drums and a friend of his, Ali Hassinen, playing the guitar. Since the band lost their rehearsal room and couldn't find a replacement, they had to pause for a while. Towards the end of 1995 Manu Lehtinen and Miika Partala activated the band again. Partala now played the electric guitar and also took over the vocals. The band recorded new songs, with Jarno Lehtinen playing the drums. This resulted in the demo Crosshope , which appeared in early 1996. During the year Johnny Pesonen joined as session drummer and Jari Mantour joined as second guitarist. With this cast followed an appearance in Jyvaskyla. Then Mantour left the band again, so that the group played as a trio for the next three gigs. In January 1997 the group went to the Watercastle Studio in Jyvaskyla to record their first EP. Tribal Eagle was released in the beginning of summer 1997. During the recording, Kalle Paju came back to the band and with Janne-Jussi Kontoniemi a suitable drummer was added. 1997 held the eight appearances with different bands. In March 1998 the band went back to the studio to record their debut album. Street Corner Queen was released on May 20 through Manu Lehtinens and Miika Partala's label Little Rose Productions. In the following years three different versions of the album appeared. During the year the band played nine albums and worked on a second album. In January and February 1999, the band recorded and mixed the new album. The band also played a concert with Sentenced in Lutakko . In early spring the single … to Die and Gain was released to promote the album. The album Here to Stay followed in April . The publication was followed by a small tour, as well as individual appearances in Finland. The first performances outside of Finland took place at the end of June. The band played two appearances in the Netherlands . At the second gig the band played together with Mortification in Rotterdam . A few days later another gig in Tampere followed with Mortification . In November the band played at the Maata Nakyvissa Festival in Turku . In the same year the EP Tribal Eagle and the album Street Corner Queen were released together. There was also a cover version of Red River , originally from One Bad Pig . At the beginning of 2000 Miika Partala decided to leave the band, but agreed to do the already booked gigs with the band. At the end of March the band played at the Bobfest in Stockholm together with bands like Antestor , Veni Domine and Crimson Moonlight . At the beginning of the summer, JJ Kontoniemi also decided to leave the band, but also agreed to play the already booked gigs. In June the band played again in the Netherlands and played in Rotterdam on June 30th. The next day she played at the Seaside Festival in Norway . At the end of July, three appearances followed in Germany : on July 20th in Oelsnitz , the next day in Stuttgart and then in Gotha . In 2001 the band announced their breakup.

The band reunited in 2006 and played their first gig in Keuruu in June 2006. The show was videotaped for a scheduled DVD release. After a few rehearsals, the final return of the band was announced on December 24th. On May 19, 2007 another gig at the Immortal Metal Fest in Nokia followed . On August 17th, the band played at the True Attitude Fest in Heinola and played a new song called Fields of War for the first time in eight years . During the year the band worked on more new songs for an album scheduled for spring 2008. On November 16, the band performed again at the Maata Nakyvissa Festival, where they played another new song at 3:16 . In early 2008, the band worked on the new album and recorded a demo in January that contained twelve songs. On March 10th, the band went to the studio to record the album. After five days in the Drumforest Studio in Viitasaari , the band recorded all drum tracks as well as some bass tracks on March 14th. On April 1st, the recordings continued at Watercastle Studio, this time lasting two weeks. After the recordings were finished, the first appearance in Switzerland followed on April 26th at the Elements of Rock Festival. From April to June the album was mixed in the Watercastle Studio and then mixed by Chartmakers by Svante Forsbäck . In June the band played one gig in Finland, another in Germany in August and another in the Netherlands. Nine of the twelve recorded songs were included on the album From the Midst of the Battle , which was released on August 13 via Bullroser Records . The album reached number 11 in the Finnish album charts. Towards the end of the year there followed 14 appearances across Europe . In early 2009 further appearances followed in Finland, as well as the release of the EP Retaliatory Strike. The rest of the year the band spent working on another album. In June the band also played at the Sauna Open Air . In the beginning the band played at a festival in Turku. After a few gigs in Finland in autumn and at the Brainstorm Festival in the Netherlands, the band played nine gigs in Mexico in November . In January the band got together, after which drummer Kontoniemi decided to take a year off from the band and concentrate on other things. The album should feature session drummer Jayson Sherlock, founding member of Mortification. In the end, however, it was not possible for him to record the songs, so that the album could not be recorded for the time being. The band then played a concert in Assen, the Netherlands, and another in Finland. In March the band went to the studio, with the drummer Kontoniemi again. Deathbed Poetry - Hope Against Hope was released in 2011 by Bullroser Records. The album reached number 38 in the Finnish album charts.

style

The band is one of the oldest bands in Christian metal . In addition to Death Metal elements, influences from Thrash Metal are sometimes used .
