The states of Germany and São Tomé and Príncipe maintain a friendly and tension-free relationship. However, the bilateral relationship is still poorly developed.

history

The islands have been part of the Portuguese Empire since the 15th century . After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, the state of São Tomé and Príncipe was fully independent in 1975, which was recognized by both German states. After that, friendly relations developed particularly with the GDR .

After the end of the GDR in 1990, relations did not intensify any further.

diplomacy

Both countries have no direct diplomatic missions in the other country. The Federal Republic of Germany is represented in São Tomé and Príncipe through its embassy in Libreville ( Gabon ), while São Tomé and Príncipe represents its interests in Germany through its embassy in Brussels ( Belgium ).

In Bremen , the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe maintains an honorary consulate in the capital of São Tomé and Príncipe São Tomé an Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany has a presence.

education

Thanks to the friendly contacts between São Tomé and Príncipe and the GDR, around 40 São Toméer studied in the GDR in the 1980s, particularly in the agricultural sciences course at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . A number of later important personalities of the island state were among them, so u. a. later President Pinto da Costa .

After the end of the GDR in 1990, these scholarships were not continued, and more and more of the former GDR students are leaving their leading positions in São Tomé and Príncipe for reasons of age.

In 2016, a small German course of study was set up for the first time at the young Universidade Pública de São Tomé e Príncipe . The German classes began there on 18 January 2016, 15 students.

Economy and tourism

The German-São-Tome economic relations are not very well developed. For example, German exports to São Tomé and Príncipe amounted to just 0.3 million US dollars in 2014, while imports from what was once the world's largest cocoa producer to Germany amounted to 0.8 million US dollars in the same period.

The German Embassy in Libreville, which is responsible for São Tomé and Príncipe, has so far financed some small projects in rural development and in the promotion of educational projects and women's groups.

More significant economic ties are expected as soon as oil can be produced in the presumed deposits in the Gulf of Guinea , a substantial part of which is in the territory of São Tomé and Príncipes.

Tourism in São Tomé and Príncipe has been expanding since the 1990s. A number of hotels and holiday complexes already exist, including German investments since the beginning. German tourists Sao Tome and Principe is a hot tip, especially the experience of nature on the island of Principe , to the list of the 2012 UNESCO - biosphere reserves was recorded. There are already some German travel specialists for São Tomé and Príncipe.
