The states of Germany and Cape Verde maintain a friendly and problem-free relationship.

history

The Cape Verde Islands have been part of the Portuguese Empire since their discovery in 1456 by Portuguese sailors . After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, the state of Cape Verde gained full independence in 1975, which was recognized by both German states.

Since its independence, the Republic of Cape Verde has received around 100 million euros from the West German Federal Republic as part of financial and technical development cooperation, making it one of the countries with the highest German development aid per inhabitant. In contrast to other former Portuguese colonies such as Angola and Mozambique in particular, the country was not one of the main target countries for East German GDR development cooperation .

After the country has been managed by the World Bank as a country with medium economic power since 2010 , German development cooperation with Cape Verde has ended.

diplomacy

The Federal Republic of Germany does not have its own embassy in Cape Verde and is represented there by the German embassy in Dakar in Senegal . An honorary consul of the Federal Republic of Germany is present in the Cape Verdean city of Mindelo .

Cape Verde is represented in Germany with its own embassy in Berlin. There are also Cape Verdean honorary consulates in Hamburg , Stuttgart , Homburg and Eschborn ( Frankfurt city region ).

Culture and tourism

Since the international attention for the Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora (1941–2011), the music of the Cape Verde Islands has also been known among German friends of world music . Singers such as Lura , Carmen Souza or Mayra Andrade in particular are known in this country for both guest performances and recordings.

Germano Almeida is considered one of the most important names in contemporary Cape Verdean literature. His novel Das Testament des Herr Napumoceno , first published in German as a Fischer paperback in 1997 , is one of the rare examples of German translations of Cape Verdean works.

German vacationers are particularly familiar with the country for hiking and individual travel. Cape Verde is now also offered in the catalogs for package tours , and the island of Sal in particular has become a destination for international mass tourism . A large number of travel guides and television programs in Germany continue to help establish Cape Verdes on the German travel market.

After Portuguese and Italians with 30% each, German holidaymakers were the third largest group among visitors to Cape Verdes in 2007 with around 12%.

education

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) enables scholarship holders from both countries to stay in the other country every year . In 2015, 16 sponsors from Germany came to Cape Verde, while 13 sponsored Cape Verdeans visited Germany.

In addition, the DAAD maintains cooperations and university projects with Cape Verdean educational institutions.

Sports

Teams and athletes from Germany and Cape Verde rarely meet. One of these cases was the encounter between the Cape Verdean national basketball team and the German selection in the Olympic qualification tournament in Athens in July 2008 , when the Cape Verdean team was eliminated.

Some Cape Verdean football players were also active in German clubs, including Mickaël Tavares and Cafú .
