history

Falconer during the nationwide meeting of the DFO 1960 in Xanten

Hunters , ornithologists and cultural scientists interested in falconry founded the German Falcon Order in Berlin in 1921 . The founding meeting took place on 26./27. May 1923 in Leipzig. They wanted to revive the old art of falconry in Germany and promote the protection of birds of prey . According to the association, the name medal goes back "to the zeitgeist of the year it was founded" and is retained to this day.

From 1967 to 1972 the German Falcon Order was a member of the German Council for Bird Protection , the umbrella organization of bird protection organizations in Germany. The DFO was however in 1972 after heated debates u. a. to hunt birds excluded from the association. In the course of this controversy, the German Hunting Protection Association (DJV) left the DRV in 1974 .

The other two larger German falconer associations are the nationwide active Order of German Falconers (ODF), founded in 1962, and the Association of German Falconers (VDF), founded in 1990, mainly active in the eastern German states. In addition to the three large associations, there are also a few smaller falconry associations in Germany.

organization

The DFO is a non-profit association that is open to everyone who wants to support the preservation of falconry and the protection of birds of prey. The DFO has around 1,600 members (as of 2019) and is the largest falconer association in Germany. About half of the members practice falconry, the other part are ornithologists, veterinarians and other interested parties.

The association has been issuing a yearbook a . a. with reports from practical falconry ( pickling ), current research on birds of prey as well as treatises on the current legal situation. The board of directors sends out the Tinnunculus newsletter twice a year with information about current events and the association's internal affairs. In addition to the annual so-called Landesbeizen organized by the regional associations , the Federal DFO organizes a falconer's conference every two years, in which guests from all over the world regularly take part. Some national associations organize courses to prepare for the falconry exam.

Like the ODF and VDF, the DFO is a member of the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey (IAF).

Falconry exam

In some federal states, the DFO regional associations organize preparation courses for the falconry examination by falconers, ornithologists, legal experts and veterinarians. Exams can currently be taken in Bavaria , Hamburg , Berlin , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Lower Saxony , Hesse , North Rhine-Westphalia , Saarland , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia . During the falconry examination:

  • Birds of prey and protection of birds of prey
  • Law
  • Birds of prey husbandry
  • practical hunt and care of the game

Birds of prey protection

The DFO has gained recognition through the targeted breeding and reintroduction of the peregrine falcons, which became extinct in northern and eastern Germany in the 1970s . The DFO is also involved in the rescue, reception and rehabilitation of sick or accident birds of prey.
