The origins of the dance archive date back to the 19th century: from 1873 were at the dance teaching Art Academy in Berlin - the art of dance a library and an archive for the systematic documentation established that in the 1930's to the - the first time in Germany German champions facilities for Dance by Fritz Böhme was continued as the German dance archive and financed with public funds. Of its extensive holdings, however, only a collection of 20 scrapbooks was saved from the destruction of the Second World War , which had been deposited in the Berlin archive and which the owner had taken to Switzerland when the war began. The dance archive itself was completely destroyed in a British air raid on the night of March 2, 1943. After the total loss, Böhme built up a new collection, which was relocated in more than 30 book boxes to Seeberg Castle in what was then Reichsgau Sudetenland , Eger administrative district and has since been lost. Only a very small number of books from this second collection have returned to today's German Dance Archive in Cologne as a gift from a Czech dance enthusiast.

After 1945 the dancer, dance teacher and publicist Kurt Peters continued this tradition and rebuilt the archive on a private initiative, initially in Hamburg and from 1965 in Cologne. These holdings were finally bought in 1985 by the SK Stiftung Kultur and made available to the public together with the city's cultural office.
