Devil's Playground is the sixth studio album by British musician Billy Idol . It was released on Sanctuary Records in March 2005 and is the comeback studio album after a twelve year hiatus.
Origin and style
The album Cyberpunk , which was panned by many critics and was less successful than the 1980s, as well as a contract with Chrysalis Records had led to the forced break. Sanctuary Records had promised Idol absolute artistic freedom for the comeback and kept to it. He was once again supported by the guitarist Steve Stevens . The album was produced by Keith Forsey . A cover song was recorded with Plastic Jesus , the original of which is attributed to Ed Rush and George Cromarty. The album contains two tracks similarly named after women, Sherri and Cherie , the former being a pop song and the latter being an acoustic song. Otherwise there are some fast pieces somewhere between hard rock and melodic punk rock, such as the opening Super Overdrive . In the following years Billy Idol played some festivals around the world and also appeared on the Warped Tour .
reception
The album reached number 15 in Germany and number 46 in the USA. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic awarded two out of five points. He wrote the album wise in an interesting, fruitful direction for Idol, one that honors his veteran status without sounding aged.
The song Scream was used in an episode of Viva La Bam .
