Dick's Picks Volume 9 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded on September 16, 1990 in Madison Square Garden , New York City , and released on October 28, 1997 with their own label Grateful Dead Records .

After Brent Mydland died in June 1990, this was the first tour without him and the second show with Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby . For Hornsby, Dick's Picks Volume 9 is only the second released album with the Deads after Infrared Roses , for Welnick the third.

The last albums in the Dick's Picks series largely used concert material from the 1970s, making Dick's Picks Volume 9 the first album in the series to reproduce a complete concert from the 1990s.

Just like the previous album Terrapin Station (Limited Edition) , Dick's Picks Volume 9 was recorded between the albums Built to Last and Without a Net , although Mydland had also contributed to these three albums. Only the song Standing on the Moon was used by Built to Last , the songs Cassidy and Looks Like Rain by Without a Net .

Since a concert in the Bayfront Arena on October 15, 1988 in Saint Petersburg , Florida , the so-called Space has been recorded and performed again at this concert . With Space while free to improvise phases of musicians called, as opposed to drums , which only the drum solo by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann were called.

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" Initial studies have concluded that repeated exposure to Grateful Dead music may be habit forming, and can result in a permanent change to the psyche of the listener. While no one has ever successfully reversed this condition, it can sometimes be controlled by repeasted exposure to Grateful Dead music. "

criticism

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 9 was not rated well. From All Music Guide Album 2 received from Rolling Stone 3 and The Music Box 4 of 5 Stars.
