The Story of the Weeping Camel is a German documentary film from 2003 . The script and direction are by the Mongolian director Byambasuren Davaa and the Italian director and cameraman Luigi Falorni . Both were studying at the Munich University of Television and Film , which produced the film in cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) and funded by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFFB).

The film tells the story of a nomad family who lives with their flock of sheep in the Gobi desert and a newly born white camel that was rejected by its mother. In a hoos ritual , the mother camel is made to adopt her young by means of a horse head fiddle .

The film premiered at the Munich Film Festival .

It is a “fairytale-like story,” says the lexicon of international films , “half documentary, half staged, which is told at a slow pace with beguiling images of the desert. It is also about the people in a deserted area who are looking for their way into the future between tradition and progress. "
Awards
The film received numerous awards. The directors were honored by the American Directors' Guild for the best documentary of the year. At the 2005 Academy Awards , the film was nominated for Best Documentary .
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
