action

The eccentric loner Werner Seiler is said to have killed his underage work colleague Lucy Dirnhost. But so far nothing has been proven of the mentally ill and alcohol-dependent man. The police officer Roland Prengler is assigned to him and smuggled into his workplace as an undercover agent . Slowly he wins the trust of Werner, who opens up to him more and more. So the two go on binge drinking and Roland defends Werner from the villagers and at his workplace.

Werner vehemently denies the murder, but admits in the course of the investigation that he had a crush on Lucy. A kind of friendship develops between the two and Roland himself doubts that Werner committed the murder. He helps him get parts of his life back under control, and as a thank you Werner even sets up a room of his own in his house, which he otherwise only lives with his sheep.

In the village pub there is finally an argument with the residents and work colleagues, in which Werner triumphs with Roland's help. The joy is short-lived, however, because when Werner and Roland return, they find the house devastated and the sheep slain. They bury it together. Finally, Roland Werner confesses an alleged murder and pressures him to admit the murder of Lucy. Werner does this and is arrested shortly afterwards.

In custody, Werner remains silent at first, but Roland can persuade him to lead his colleagues to the alleged place where he buried his alleged victim. But Werner manages to escape and he attacks his alleged friend after a chase through the forest. When he tries to strangle Roland and at the same time denies having done anything, he is shot by another police officer.

background

The film The Measure is Alexander Costea's thesis for the Munich Film School . The idea came to the director, who also wrote the screenplay, through a radio report about false confessions that featured a similar murder case. Costea researched similar cases and got information about the real procedure in such a case through discussions with a person concerned and lawyers who had represented such clients, as well as from officials of the State Criminal Police Office .

The film premiered on June 28, 2015 at the Munich Film Festival. Shot with the support of ARD and originally conceived for the cinema, the film was only shown at a few other festivals, including the Festival of German Films and the Montreal World Film Festival . Costea won the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award in the screenplay category in 2016 and was nominated for the First Steps Award . Two years later, on July 4, 2017, the drama was shown for the first time on German television in the series “ Debut in the First ”.

Reviews

The film was received largely positively. Tilmann P. Gangloff praised the drama in his review for the Westfalenpost :

“Because he concentrates exclusively on the two men, Costea succeeds in creating a captivating relationship drama, the attraction of which lies particularly in the opposing development of the two main actors: Werner remains an eccentric, but looks more quirky than threatening. Roland in turn is introduced as a popular figure, but the more he wins Werner's trust, the more questionable his methods appear. Conclusion: With its distanced camera work, this exceptional directorial debut develops a dark dynamic. "
