action

The film takes place on the night of July 21, 1969, when the American astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first person to step on the moon . In Toulon , some soldiers of the naval ship “Royale” were given an exit . Before they are allowed to go into town, they are checked by the chief boatman and the chief of the military police, Lipziwski (or Lip for short ). He humiliates the corporal HG in front of the other sailors by forcing him to have his underpants checked for cleanliness. He then swears revenge and wants to kill Lip with a knife at the next opportunity. The HG moves into town and urges his cabin boy Victor (nickname "Mint-Brause") to accompany him. According to an inauguration ritual of the Navy, the HG wants to pay him a beer and a prostitute that night . The two are drawn to the “Miami” bar in the “Klein Chicago” entertainment district, where four prostitutes are waiting for them: Josy , Maggie , Kuku and Linda . Each of the women keeps a secret, which they reveal in a black and white screen during the course of the film. Josy tells the audience about a difficult, loveless childhood as the daughter of a medicine professor. She's been in love with Lip since spending the night with him. For his sake, she had the outlines of a world map tattooed on both of her buttocks . Maggie recently lost her brother, who, as a poet, had given her a lot of joy with his works. Kuku is actually a boy, but was raised as a girl by her mother since she was a child and was supposed to become the most beautiful girl in “Little Chicago”. She is chosen by Mint-Brause and goes to a room with him. Together with Linda, HG observes the two of them from an adjoining room through a one-way mirror . At the same time he makes Linda a marriage proposal. Since he only has to serve in the Navy for a few days, he plans to take over a car repair shop that he inherited from his father. Meanwhile, Mint-Brause recognizes the true gender of Kuku and leaves the room furious. The HG follows him and meets Lip , whom he stabs after a short verbal argument. Mint-Brause has meanwhile returned to the bar. He is amazed that Linda has now taken the place of the bar manager: Madame Lin Ho fell over with her chair, fell through the rotten floor and died in the basement. The HG is caught and arrested by marines. Lip is taken to an ambulance on a stretcher for an operation. Josy accompanies him and hopes for a new beginning.

criticism

"Authentically and calmly told"

"The film based on a novel by the director strives for authenticity and links the mythologically exaggerated story of initiation with a story of revenge."

"The moonlit night of Toulon" tells in large pictures of great feelings in the shadow of great world history. "
