action

It is the misfortune of the two twin clowns that they look so confusingly similar to a murderer and are therefore transported to the police headquarters immediately after the end of their circus performance, where they have to give extra help to the unintentional clowning of Commissioner Bernard. Namely, who emulates Maigret's deeds with little success , believes he has already found the solution to the riddle: One of the two is the murderer, the other his doppelganger. He is in the fortunate position of being able to avail himself of the help of chance, because the murdered man was playing a supporting role during the exterior shots of a film, when the perpetrator appeared out of the program and his crime was filmed by the film cameras. But Bernard is soon at the end of his Latin, because each of the twins confesses to the act to protect his brother.

While the inspector is still pondering the problem of the doppelganger, a gang of gangsters settles the case among themselves. The self-absorbed murderer Jojo, who only committed the act as a test of courage in order to be accepted into the gang, becomes too dangerous for the other members. When his picture appears in the newspaper, they kill him without further ado, not without first slipping him a farewell letter containing the confession.

criticism

The lexicon of international film concludes: "parody seasoned detective story that takes its entertainment value from the critical, yet casually thrown over-subscription of the people and the humor of the situation." Similarly, the judges Evangelical movie watchers (13 years after the premiere) : "A well-acted crime film from 1957, staged with a light hand by Sacha Guitry, whose inconsequential story about a murderer and his (twin) doppelgangers is presented in a way that is not unpleasant."
