action

The story begins with Murray French talking about his father as a boy. He was one of the fishermen in the small port of Tickle Head in Newfoundland . Well, in the present, old Murray is one of the shabby town's unemployed fishermen who receive their welfare every month .

The mayor of the village sees himself in a position to establish a company for petrochemical products in the village and thus to create long-awaited jobs. However, the company has certain requirements. One is that medical care must be guaranteed on site. Since this has been tried unsuccessfully for eight years, this hurdle seems insurmountable. More and more people leave the small town with resignation, including the mayor himself. Murray takes over his duties.

It just so happened that the former mayor caught a young doctor at his new job at the airport customs office who tried to smuggle cocaine . For fear of a prison sentence, he wants to bribe the officer "with something", and he is all too happy to get involved. And already he is allowed to do a month of "compulsory" service in Tickle Head. During this one month the residents have to try to convince him of the advantages of permanent residence. For this purpose, all levers are set in motion: The place is subjected to a thorough cleaning, the cricket-loving doctor is led to believe that cricket is the favorite sport of the villagers and even the pretty young postmaster should be included as an attraction, which she refuses. The young doctor is also engaged. A connection that crumbles over the course of the film and many phone calls, as the village community learns. Because the telephone is tapped and every conversation is recorded in order to always be in the picture about the thoughts of the doctor. So you learn z. B. also his favorite dish, which is then promptly served to him. The residents also know very well about his late father, who he misses a lot, and Murray is now miming a paternal affection with fishing trips and many attentive words. To do this, he even invents a deceased son.

Now that the first condition of the investors seems almost fulfilled, new hurdles are emerging. The company management needs 150 workers for a commitment. The place has only 120 inhabitants. So during a visit by the investors you create a population of over 160 people through an illusion: by having the 84 visitors to the pub ( counted hidden by one of the managers) , after the investors have left it first, also quickly leave the pub through the town walk and take a seat in the church, where the Murray manufacturers are led by a different route. Another hurdle that now arises is a high bribe that the investor demands. After this was obtained under semi-legal circumstances - the only bank clerk in the place granted a loan on his own, at the price of his job, which the parent company had previously strictly refused - it now appears that the doctor no longer wants to stay. Here, too, one tries to encourage one's willingness to stay through “jealousy games” (a tourist is portrayed as a competing doctor).

In the end, everything ends well. The young doctor stays ( although he found out about the lying masquerade ) and the factory gives everyone work. And a last deep look from the young postwoman to the doctor leaves room for interpretation.

reception

The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival .

The film received a 60 percent positive rating from the Rotten Tomatoes , while an audience survey there even received 72 percent approval.

The portal kino.de reports: Don McKellar's “The Great Temptation” is as lovable in good faith as its main character, is a social fairy tale that thrives on an amusing premise, strange but never exaggerated characters, laconic wit and successful timing.

The magazine epd Film , on the other hand, writes: It is much more important, however, that the film clearly carries its calculations. As gnarled as its protagonists are, the staging is smooth.
